5 –HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) is an amino acid that is a precursor to the neurotransmitter serotonin. 5-HTP is also known as oxitriptan. It is also produced commercially from the seeds of an African plant known as Griffonia simplicifolia.
This supplement is used for sleep disorder such as insomnia, depression, anxiety, migraine, and tension-type headache, fibromyalgia, obesity, permanent syndrome (PMS), premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD),seizure disorder, and Parkinson disease.
How does it works?
5-HTP is increasing the production of the chemical serotonin and it works in the brain and central nervous system. Serotonin is believed to play important role and it is used for several disease such as depression, insomnia, obesity, and many other conditions.
5-HTP uses and effectiveness

- Some studies claims that taking 5-HTP by mouth improves symptoms of depression. Others studies have found that doses of 150-3000 mg daily for 2-4 weeks can improve symptoms of depression.
- Down syndrome. Some studies shows that giving 5-HTP can influence to improve muscle and activity. In the other hand, others studies that it does not improve muscle or development when taken from infancy until 3-4 years of age. Scientist also shows that using 5-HTP along with conventional prescription (expert) drug does improve development, social skills, or language skills.
5-HTP side effect and safety
As a drug, 5-HTP has been used safety in doses up to 400 mg daily for up to one year. Moreover, some people who have eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome (EMS). It is a serious condition involving extreme muscle tenderness (myalgia) and blood abnormalities (eosinophilia). Some people has opinion that it causes by an accidental ingredients or contaminant in some 5-HTP product. Furthermore, there is not enough scientific evidence to know if EMS is caused by 5-HTP, a contamination or others factors. As long as it is not proven, 5-HTP should be used cautiously.
