What is 5-HTP?

5-Hydroxtryptophan (5-HTP) is an amino acid that is a precursor to the neurotransmitter serotonin. Specifically, it is converted into 5-HTP in the body. 5-HTP can be produced syntactically, or it can be derived from natural sources. 5 HTP is made by the seeds of the African plant Griffonia simplicifolia. Research

A study by Cangiano, et al., published in the “Journal of Clinical Nutrition” in 1992 followed 20 obese patients. In this experiments placebo is used in six weeks period, but participant did not lose weight. After that those on 5-HTP lost 2 percent of their body weight during the non-diet period and an additional 3 percent on the diet. They also experienced quicker satiety (which means the state of being satisfactorily full and unable to eat more).

How does 5-HTP work?

Serotonin is a system messenger, also called a neurotransmitter with many functions in the body. One of those functions is that can help to reduce appetite. In fact, in the medicinal market, the role of serotonin in appetite control and satiety is well established. It helps for selective serotonin and increases serotonin levels which reduce food intake. Furthermore, such medications are available by prescription only, and it may have limited long-term efficacy.
